Triple Bypass

What is the Triple Bypass?

The Triple Bypass is a one-day, 120-mile road ride from Evergreen, Colorado, to Avon in the Vail Valley over Juniper, Loveland and Vail passes, with about 10,800 feet of climbing. It runs on the second Saturday of July and started in 1988 when a group of local cyclists decided to ride Evergreen to Vail in a day. It now draws several thousand riders, sells out, and closes Loveland Pass to cars for the day; an 80-mile Double Bypass starts in Empire.

How the Triple Bypass started

One July day in 1988 a group of Evergreen cyclists decided it would be fun to ride from Evergreen to the Vail Valley. That first ride, over 100 miles with close to 11,000 feet of climbing, became the Triple Bypass. The three passes, Juniper, Loveland and Vail, gave it the name.

The ride became the signature event of Team Evergreen, a local cycling nonprofit, and grew from a few hundred riders to several thousand. It is now produced by Shift Events operating as Team Evergreen. Registration fees feed the club's giving, and riders can also fundraise for one of about a dozen approved charities. The organizers say the event has donated millions to nonprofits over the years.

The 2025 ride was the 37th. Along the way the event added the shorter Double Bypass from Empire and a Blue Sky Hill Climb, and it now closes U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass to car traffic during the ride.

What to expect on the day

Riders roll out of Buchanan Park in Evergreen from before dawn; you can start any time but everyone must be on the road by 8:00 AM. The first climb is Juniper Pass on Squaw Pass Road, a long steady grade out of Bergen Park. Then a descent to Idaho Springs, the climb to Loveland Pass on a road closed to cars, Summit County bike paths past Dillon, and Vail Pass before the finish in Avon. Bag drop is at the start and there is a jersey exchange.

Aid stations have cutoff times set by permits and safety. Miss one and your number comes off, with a shuttle to the finish. The Double Bypass field masses at 8:00 AM in Empire and rides the last two passes.

Mornings in Evergreen can start in fog and cloud, as in 2025, before the sun burns through. The fast riders finish in under six hours; most take much of the day. Packet pickup is free and can be done by proxy with a photo of your ID.

Weather in Evergreen for the Triple Bypass

Around July 11 Evergreen averages a high near 78°F and a low near 54°F, with about a one-in-four chance of rain on a given day. The passes are far higher and colder than the start, and the 2025 ride began in low cloud and dense fog before clearing. Carry a shell and warm layers for the descents.

The town

Sleep, eat, fix the bike.

Evergreen is an unincorporated mountain community of about 9,300 in the Front Range foothills of Jefferson County, Colorado, about 19 miles west of Denver at 7,162 feet. It is the start of the Triple Bypass each July and the base of the climb to Juniper Pass, the first of the ride's three passes. Between Evergreen Lake, the Jefferson County open-space parks and the roads toward Mount Evans, it is a common training base for Denver riders.

Evergreen is about 30 minutes west of downtown Denver on I-70 and Colorado 74, and about 52 miles, roughly an hour, from Denver International Airport (DEN). Red Rocks is 15 to 20 minutes away. There is no practical transit from the airport; rent a car. On Triple Bypass morning the start area at Buchanan Park is closed to cars, so check the organizer's parking map.
