Phoenix, Arizona · bring the bike

Should you bring your bike to Phoenix?

Bring it for anything longer than a day.

The short answer, in full

American checks a bike in a case as an ordinary bag, $45 each way paid online when it is your only checked bag (Oct 2026). A day on Bike Emporium’s carbon road rental in south Scottsdale is $90 (Oct 2026), so renting only wins on a single day. For any other airline, read its sports-equipment page before you book. No Valley shop says on its own site that it takes in a shipped bike, so call before you send one. Plan on a car: the shops in this guide sit 2 to 23 miles north, east and southeast of downtown Phoenix.

Flying to Phoenix with a bike

  1. Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX)

    • 4 mi from Phoenix

About 4 miles east of downtown Phoenix.

    More about PHX

Terminal 3: Alaska, Allegiant, Breeze, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Sun Country, United and others; Terminal 4: American and Southwest, plus Aeroméxico, Air France, British Airways, Volaris and WestJet, per the airport’s airline list (Oct 2026). The free PHX Sky Train runs 24 hours between both terminals, the Rental Car Center and the Valley Metro Rail stop at 44th and Washington streets.

What the airlines charge

Read on the airline’s own page, Oct 2026.

Airline by airline

American (Terminal 4): one non-motorized touring, mountain, tandem or racing bike in a hard case, bike bag or box, handlebars fixed sideways, pedals off (or pedals and bars wrapped in foam). Standard checked bag fee up to 50 lb, the standard overweight fee from 51 to 70 lb, and oversize fees do not apply. Not in a hard case, the bike is treated as fragile, and American is liable for damage only when the bike is in a hard case that is visibly damaged. First bag $50 ($45 paid online), second $60 ($55 online), updated May 18, 2026; a standard bag is 62 linear inches and 50 lb. Southwest (the other Terminal 4 carrier), Delta, United, Alaska, Frontier, JetBlue and Allegiant: read each airline’s sports-equipment page before you book.

Shipping your bike to Phoenix

No Valley shop says on its own site that it receives a shipped bike (Oct 2026).

How shipping works here

BikeFlights lists Moxie Multisport in Scottsdale as a partner to ship to; the shop’s own site doesn’t say so, so call before you book. Bike Emporium in south Scottsdale builds bikes bought elsewhere and boxes bikes for shipping, prices not published (Oct 2026), but does not say it takes in a carrier delivery. BikeFlights prices a shipment from the box’s size and weight when you book, bigger and heavier costing more, and takes nothing over 150 lb or 165 inches in total size; its shipping-policy and rates pages give no transit-day count (Oct 2026).

Renting a bike in Phoenix

What renting costs and what you get

Bike Emporium in south Scottsdale is the one shop that publishes its fleet and prices: a 2023 carbon Cannondale SuperSix EVO with Shimano 105 and disc brakes, 48 to 61 cm, $90 per 24 hours; a 2024 Marin Kentfield 1 aluminum gravel bike, 7-speed, $60; a 2023 Cannondale Habit full-suspension mountain bike, $85 (Oct 2026). Helmet, lock and bottle cage with every rental; pedals and a repair kit with the road and mountain bikes (the page doesn’t say so for the gravel bike). A $50 non-refundable deposit holds one; closed Sundays. McDowell Mountain Cycles in Fountain Hills rents road, gravel, mountain and e-bikes and delivers to McDowell Mountain Regional Park, prices not published. Bike Barn in Phoenix rents road and mountain bikes through a booking page; Airpark Bike Co in Scottsdale rents mountain bikes for the dirt and you need a hitch rack. The math: on American a cased bike is $45 each way paid online when it is your only checked bag, $90 round trip (Oct 2026), the price of one day on the carbon rental. Rent for a single day. For a training week or a winter month, bring yours, and bring your gravel bike: the one gravel rental with a published spec is a 7-speed.

Getting around Phoenix with a bike

You’ll want a car.

The riding is spread across the Valley.

Getting around, in full

The shops in this guide run from Coronado, about 2 miles north of downtown, to south Scottsdale at about 11 miles, Chandler at about 14 and Fountain Hills at about 23. The ride starts run from Granada Park, about 6 miles north, to the Four Peaks lot at McDowell Mountain, about 23 miles northeast. Out of PHX with a bike case: the free PHX Sky Train runs every 3 to 5 minutes, 24 hours, to the Rental Car Center, where 14 companies rent; reserve, because walk-up cars are limited. Early Bag Check at the Rental Car Center lets you check bags as you drop the car; ask your airline whether it takes a bike case there. Rideshare picks up at marked curbs at Terminals 3 and 4 and at the Rental Car Center visitor lot, and Waymo uses the same terminal spots around the clock. Taxis are $7 for the first mile and $2.60 a mile after, or a $20 flat rate to downtown Phoenix between Roosevelt and Lincoln streets and 7th Avenue and 7th Street (Oct 2026). Riding in or out on a built bike: the airport asks riders to lock up at the free racks at the 44th Street PHX Sky Train station (enter off Washington Street, heading south on 41st Place) and take the train to the terminals; locks left more than five days are removed. That station is also the Valley Metro Rail stop for Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa; bus 44 stops there and bus 13 at the 24th Street Sky Train station. Valley Metro’s bike rules were not read for this guide (its pages load as scripts with no text in a fetch, Oct 2026), so check valleymetro.org or call 602-253-5000 before you plan on the train with a bike.

The rules on the road in Arizona

Every rule, in full

Arizona’s traffic law for bikes (passing distance, where to ride in the lane, helmet rules by age, e-bike classes, sidewalk riding) is on the state legislature’s and ADOT’s sites; read it before you ride. What is confirmed is heat. From the City of Phoenix, read Oct 2026: on days the National Weather Service issues an Extreme Heat Warning, these trails close from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Echo Canyon and Cholla on Camelback Mountain; the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail and its associated trails in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve; and at South Mountain the Holbert, Mormon and Hau’pal Loop trails and the National Trail from the Pima Canyon Trailhead (the National Trail stays open from other trailheads, and the rest of Pima Canyon’s trails stay open). The list names trails, not roads; nothing on the page says it covers Summit Road. The city’s advice is to do outdoor activity in the coolest part of the day and drink water before, during and after. Valley Epic Rides asks for at least 1.5 liters of water on a summer ride and cancels for heat and dust storms.

What is this about?

Back to Phoenix

I’d like to say I ride for everyone else. I ride because it changed me.

In 2027 I ride 10,000 miles, all on the bike, and every ride gets written down. The money goes through the orgs’ own rides. It never touches me.
