- Ten or fifteen minutes before 5:30 pm. Tell whoever's leading that you're new.

- The easiest pace the host lists is 13–15 mph: steady — you'll breathe hard on the hills. It splits into pace groups. Pick the slowest one your first time; you can move up next week.

A weekly training ride. Buddy up with riders at your pace. There is usually a C group at 13 to 15 mph and a B group at 16 to 18, sometimes a few faster riders. Front and rear lights and helmets are mandatory.
